Community Led Conservation

MASTER CLASS - 4 March 2022 ONLINE

Aim

A broad aim of the MASTER CLASS is to discuss the issues related to participation and encouragement of stakeholders and communities for conservation in India. It will introduce some of the key philosophical issues, practical and management challenges which arise in this process.

Content

People in communities, use their socio-cultural understanding and interact with the environment accordingly. In this manner they become the ‘carriers’ of cultures and traditions. These characteristics developed by a community are a part of the value system of their habitat, making every community unique in its own way. A course is designed to create awareness and realization about how conservation needs community participation is key to heritage conservation. Further, the course will discuss about the various aspects such as understanding and interpretation of meanings involved in heritage – tangible and intangible, by the local communities; their traditional knowledge and practices applied by communities for the safeguarding of their heritage; and indigenous approaches to conservation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course the participants should:

  • Develop an understanding about Community led Conservation,
  • Assess problems and issues associated with its preservation and conservation with the community involvement,
  • Gain introduction to some of the key approaches and philosophies related to community led conservation projects.

Speakers

The course will be taught by the staff at INTACH and invited guest speakers on specific aspects of the course.
