The course will explore the challenges, risks, and opportunities in integrating heritage conservation with sustainable practices to foster the well-being of communities and the environment, under the framework of Sustainable Development Goals. It also aims to discuss the essential linkage between natural and cultural heritage, and how this relationship impacts the approaches to sustainable conservation of heritage sites.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course the participants will be able to:

To cultivate critical thinking encouraging students to explore the linkages between nature and culture for sustainable management of heritage.

Cultural and Heritage Entrepreneurship

Aim

The aim of the course is to train the participants in the tools to become entrepreneurs in the
culture and heritage domain and help them develop innovative approaches for it.

Content

The potential of culture and heritage to support economic development and generate livelihood for its practitioners has long been ignored, this has led to the situation where the continuity of cultural and heritage has become a challenge lately. The interventions, schemes,

policies by the government are helping but are not enough to tackle the issues faced by the practitioners in these fields. Hence this course aims to bridge a gap which can be filled by channelising culture and heritage as an asset and developing an entrepreneurial environment to make it sustainable.

In this course the participants will be trained in the tools that will help them design comprehensive entrepreneurial plans with culture and heritage at its core. They will interact with industry experts to develop and expand their plans and understand the importance of the various components that form a part of it.

In collaboration with our knowledge partners NICE- Network of Indian Cultural Enterprises (NICE), the course will give an overview of various aspects required for becoming a successful cultural and heritage entrepreneur.

Heritage Economics and Livelihoods

Dates: January to February 2024

Aim

The course will look at the academic area of heritage economics and the importance of its study for the sustenance of heritage. The course will further look at the role of heritage in generating livelihood and how it benefits the communities associated with heritage.

Content

Economic reasoning is increasingly employed in the cultural sector and with this course the students will be made aware of different aspects of heritage economics. The course will look at the fundamentals of the economics of heritage and its concepts and tools will be studied during the course. It will discuss the notions of ‘direct’ and ‘indirect’ benefits of heritage for visitors, local communities, cultural practitioners and other stakeholders. The course includes the study of ‘creative economy’ which focuses on understanding the notions of heritage in relation to economics along with community led approaches to heritage conservation, livelihoods, arts, crafts, and traditions. In addition to it, the importance and methods of economic valuation of heritage will be discussed which guide decisions on investments in heritage

The course addresses how economic impact is a significant metric that supports the preservation of all typologies of heritage be it built, intangible, natural or art and artefacts. It will also enable the students to be able to justify resource allocation to heritage through economic development enabled through heritage.

Storytelling in Heritage Tourism

Content

Storytelling in Heritage Tourism covers the application of the art of storytelling to showcase the historical and cultural significance of heritage sites. Participants delve into concepts of interpretation, curation, design and presentation to create meaningful visitor experiences.

The course explores the impact of tourism on heritage sites, addressing issues of carrying capacity sustainability, and socio-cultural implications. Participants learn about management strategies, including stakeholder collaboration. Cultural sensitivity and ethical considerations in heritage tourism are discussed, highlighting the importance of respecting local communities and traditions. Business aspects, such as marketing and revenue generation are also covered to ensure well-rounded learning. By the end of the course, participants would be equipped to balance the economic potential of tourism with heritage values, enhancing the visitor experience and maintaining the site’s integrity.

Research Methodology in context of Heritage

Concept:

Research Methodology in context of Heritage focuses on equipping participants with the essential skills and knowledge needed to conduct structured research. Through the course the students will delve into the fundamentals of research methodology, learn various research techniques, and gain the tools to develop and structure their research projects.

Aim:

The primary aim of this twelve-day course is to empower participants with a comprehensive understanding of research methodology in the context of heritage studies. A critical component of the course will also address plagiarism, citation and referencing. Through this program, participants will be able to develop critical thinking skills, conduct structured research, formulate research questions, design research proposals, choose appropriate methodologies, and produce high-quality analytical research papers.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course the participants would be enabled to:

Develop an argument and research idea relevant to the field of heritage,
Formulate a methodology to conduct the research,
Evaluate and analyse the literature around the research idea,
Application of appropriate data collection and analysis techniques
Apply an appropriate style of writing including references and in-text citations

Orientation to Heritage

Aim

The aim of the course is to introduce the various types of cultural and natural heritage and ways of defining their value. It would engage the participants in the discourse around the construct of heritage. The course will give the participants an introductory overview of the different typologies of heritage.

Content

The course will explore the key concepts and terminologies along with introducing critical discussions on; what is heritage, why does it matter, how do we value the past, who are the stakeholders in the process of defining heritage and what roles various people and organisations perform within it. The course will discuss the concepts of tangible, intangible, natural and living heritage. The discussion will illustrate the notions of ‘value’ and ‘significance’ associated with heritage and the ways in which this can inform the approaches to conserving and safeguarding it. Heritage is constantly evolving and becoming more inclusive and expansive over the course of time. Through this programme the students will be introduced to these changing ideas of heritage and the present-day discourses on the same.

Introduction to the Conservation of Objects and Collections

Aim

The 9-day workshop will introduce the participants to artefacts and art objects as an integral part of India’s rich heritage. It aims to give them beginners level skills to document and conserve objects. It will enable individuals who work with or have objects or collections to appropriately handle and care for them and also recognise when the objects need professional intervention and take appropriate decisions.

Content

Artefacts and art objects are a key part of our tangible heritage. Often these objects, especially the publicly displayed ones are a part of a collection, private or government. The materials that these objects are made of are extremely varied from stone, metals and wood to textiles and paper. A single collection or institution could have objects from diverse cultures and geographic regions in it. There are different processes for the appropriate documentation, storage, display and safeguarding of these diverse objects. This course is designed to help the layperson understand the important characteristics of these objects, their materials and methods. They will be introduced to the different typologies of objects based on their materials and techniques. The course will teach the participants the fundamentals of documentation and the various techniques and technologies that are used for it. They will be taught the appropriate methods to handle, store and display objects according to the principles of conservation. They will be exposed to the various approaches and principles that guide conservation and be shown some conservation techniques and get hands-on practical experience with these. Some important case studies of conservation will also be discussed with the participants. The course is a blend of theoretical and practical hands-on sessions and will be taught by experts from INTACH and outside.

Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage

Aim

The six-day workshop will introduce Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) and its significance in our cultural context to the participants. It aims to make the participants mindful of the need to document and safeguard it. The course will further expose the participants to the tools and frameworks that exist to document and safeguard ICH.

Content

India’s intangible cultural traditions have been practiced for centuries and they have been embodied in its various cultures, in the form of rituals, traditions, customs, craft forms, dance forms and so on.

Through this course the participants would be introduced to the evolution of the idea of ICH in the wider global discourse of heritage. They will understand how ICH forms a crucial part of the identity of an individual. They will be exposed to the importance of ICH for communities as well as how communities take forward various kinds of ICH practices.

The course will give them the necessary orientation to be able to identify and document ICH. The participants will be given the skills to conduct listing, identification and recording of ICH. A range of approaches, methods and technology that are used for documentation and safeguarding of ICH will be demonstrated. The course will include site visits and hands on sessions on documenting ICH.

Understanding and Listing of Built Heritage

Aim

The aim of the 6-day workshop is to introduce ways to identify different forms of built heritage, their values and the methods of listing.

Concept

The built heritage of our country is a priceless asset and a non-renewable resource. Majority of our heritage remains largely unidentified, neglected and threatened by urban pressures. INTACH from its inception has recognised the need for identifying and documenting the built heritage throughout the country. By identifying and recording such assets we have the potential to conserve both traditional buildings as well as traditional building techniques.

Through the 6-day workshop the participants will be able to identify such heritage assets and understand the listing process. They will be introduced to the newly launched ‘INTACH Heritage survey app’ and GIS as a tool for data management and processing. Through the workshop the participants will be able to apply the leanings through a hands-on exercise.
