A broad aim of the MASTER CLASS is to discuss the issues related to participation and encouragement of stakeholders and communities for conservation in India. It will introduce some of the key philosophical issues, practical and management challenges which arise in this process.
People in communities, use their socio-cultural understanding and interact with the environment accordingly. In this manner they become the ‘carriers’ of cultures and traditions. These characteristics developed by a community are a part of the value system of their habitat, making every community unique in its own way. A course is designed to create awareness and realization about how conservation needs community participation is key to heritage conservation. Further, the course will discuss about the various aspects such as understanding and interpretation of meanings involved in heritage – tangible and intangible, by the local communities; their traditional knowledge and practices applied by communities for the safeguarding of their heritage; and indigenous approaches to conservation.
