Aim

The course aims to provide a comprehensive, easy to understand overview of basic ornithology (science of birds), including bird identification, adaptation, migration, and ecological roles. It emphasizes bird conservation, field study methods, and practical applications like photography and avian health. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of ecological and cultural importance of birds and conservation challenges.

Content

The course is designed at sensitizing the participants through interactive multi-media talks on diverse and interesting subjects like history of ornithology, bird identification, flightless-ness, adaptation for flight, bird flight, migration, breeding, feeding habits, ecological role of birds / birds as bioindicators, habitats, cultural aspects, bird photography, avian diseases, first aid, conservation, field study methods / technology for conservation, and applied ornithological aspects. Scientific understanding of birds is essential for effective conservation, which the course will deliver through various sessions.

 

The course shall touch upon simplified talks on bird flu, wind-farms, vultures, owls, and house sparrow among other currently relevant topics. There is a field visit to introduce the participants to bird habitats and techniques for observing birds in a scientific perspective. Participants shall study the elementary techniques of avian biometry and data documentation.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course the participants will be able to:

 

LO1: Identify and Classify Birds
Recognize and classify birds based on physical characteristics, calls, and behavior, applying fundamental bird identification techniques.

 

LO2: Understand Bird Adaptations and Ecological Roles
Explain key adaptations that enable bird flight, migration, feeding, and reproduction, as well as understand birds’ ecological roles and their value as bio-indicators.

 

LO3: Apply Field Study Methods and Data Documentation
Utilize essential field techniques for observing and documenting bird behavior and habitats, including introductory skills in avian biometry and data recording.

 

LO4: Demonstrate Awareness of Bird Conservation Challenges and Solutions
Describe conservation issues facing various bird species, such as habitat loss and disease, and articulate conservation methods, including the impact of technology and community involvement.

  • Participation fee: Rs.4500 + 18% GST per head
