Get equipped to document and archive your personal family histories and preserve your family’s memories for future generations.

Family histories are an important part of a person’s life and identity but we often don’t record or document them. Many individuals want to be able to record them but are not equipped with the right tools and knowledge to do so, often most people end up with fragmented knowledge of the histories of their parents and grandparents thus an fragmented view of their own heritage.

During this interactive workshop, the participants will take a look at why people choose to record their family’s stories and how it helps them identify with their personal heritage. The basics of taking an oral history interview and collecting material memory, tips and tricks to bring out detailed micro-histories, and some of the challenges of interviewing family members and how to overcome them will be covered during the workshop. This will enable the participants to design and execute family history projects and a better understanding of their own heritage.

The course is being led by Ms. Malvika Bhatia, a museum and heritage professional, and an oral historian. She is the Archive Director at The Citizens’ Archive of India.

Upon completion of this workshop the participants will be able to:

• Identify the purpose of creating a family history and means to do so
• Discuss the technical aspects of conducting and storing oral history interviews and material memory digitally.
• Design a family history project.
