Martand Singh Scholarship for Traditional Craftsmanship

Late Shri Martand Singh was one of the founder members of INTACH. He devoted his life and work towards the establishment and growth of INTACH since its inception in 1984.

In his own words, “the heartbeat of INTACH was in and should be its Chapters”. Shri Martand Singh’s vision helped set up over a hundred INTACH Chapters in the country.

Mapuji, as he was lovingly known in the heritage circuits, had an unwavering passion for textiles. His eye for detail and love for a good hand excelled the threshold of perfection. This love for craftsmanship covered all related fields of heritage namely, textile, handicraft, inlay work, jewellery, weaving and so forth.

In order to celebrate Shri Martand Singh’s contribution in the field of heritage conservation in India, INTACH announces a dedicated Research Scholarship in his name. The scholarship will be called: “Martand Singh Scholarship for Traditional Craftsmanship” The scholarship hopes to encourage interested candidates working across craft-skills to question and explore existing approaches, ideologies and practices through their research. The scholarship seeks to initiate dialogue, debate, experimentation and advancement in the field of traditional building knowledge and craftsmanship.

This scholarship will be awarded to the meritorious and deserving candidate who would like to undertake high-end research on any aspect of traditional craft skills relating to heritage buildings, materials, handicraft, building craft or related craft activity.

An amount of Rs 3.00 lac will be offered on an annual basis, and it will be announced on Shri Martand Singh’s birth anniversary i.e. 10th February every year.

The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of a competitive selection process conducted by an eminent Jury.

Last date for submission of entries is 16th March 2018*

[* At a recent State Chapters Convenors’ meeting it was suggested to extend the last date of submission by a month so that an even larger number of INTACH convenors get aware of this initiative and circulate it widely.]
