India is a country with rich heritage. It is an asset to the country and should be used as a tool for development. There is immense potential in heritage, if we start looking at it as a pro development resource. These cultural resources when developed and managed sensitively can prove to be a great initiative in the formation of a cultured society and can perhaps be a single tool to deal with major issues in the society and country.
The management and conservation of heritage sites is a challenge requiring much greater attention, awareness and training in order to preserve for present and future generations in India.
Management of heritage properties should be taught as part of the curriculum of conservation studies. However it is a subject that remains mostly unversed and therefore there is a dearth of good heritage site managers. Many sub sectors of heritage like archaeology, crafts, museums, performing arts, natural resources, tourism, urban development have suffered due to the lack of understanding of the field of heritage management. In India, the practice of Heritage site management is a great tool to deal with incredibly rich heritage.
