AimA broad aim of this 4 day practical workshop is to understand the archaeology of buildings with respect to heritage and conservation practice.
ContentBuildings Archeology as a subject is an entirely new concept for the Indian context. This discipline is taught in a structural manner in the UK and is yet too be introduced in the postgraduate conservation programmes in India. Buildings Archeology is a tool that involves accurate documentation and condition analysis. These methods are the essential features that help in understanding the historical character and the various overlapping layers of a building. The traditional methods of documentation and condition assessment cannot be substituted, but can be evolved with new technologies such as, GIS, 3D laser scanning, thermal imaging etc. This 4 day workshop will introduce participants to the discipline of buildings archaeology through presentations, field visits and working sessions. A practical hands – on session will be conducted on these methods such as, GIS and its application in the documentation and analysis of historic buildings. The workshop will demonstrate the approaches and processes and various methods of documentation and condition assessment that need to be addressed while carrying out an in depth study of the built heritage.
Learning OutcomesUpon completion of this course the participants will:
- gain introduction to specialized skills required for archaeological recording and analyzing historic buildings,
- gain knowledge of digital documentation of a historic building,
- develop an understanding of relevant soft wares like GIS for buildings archeology, conservation and management,
- learn to visually analyze historic buildings/sites and assess their significance,
- develop skills to critically understand various methods of interpreting building types, their historical function and meanings.
