The term ‘Smart Heritage’ was coined in Spain at a joint meeting at a round table in 2014 at the International Biennial of Art and Heritage Management (AR&PA) in Valladolid about ‘India-Spain Co-operation in the field of Heritage Conservation and Management’. During the roundtable, INTACH suggested initiating a programme wherein a group of heritage experts, with diverse approaches, would debate about challenges faced by heritage and the acts of heritage preservation and promotion in the wake of changing global scenarios, specifically in the case of ‘Smart’ cities. The idea was born out of an objective to transform these debates into a collection of ‘essential lessons’ to deliberate on smart heritage in smart cities.

The general aim is to organise a three-day consultative meet to understand broadly the concept of ‘Smart Heritage’, analysing the meaning of ‘Smart Heritage within a Smart City’ as well as understanding the application of the concept within the management of a ‘Smart City’. There will be a special field visit within the city where the participants will get a direct experience through a background study of the city’s “Smart City” project.

The operational objective is to create awareness around the concept of “Smart Heritage” in Smart City. The consultative meet will also endeavour to make ideas like community participation, e-governance, and new operational technologies popular. The consultative meet will also try to study the initial effect that the ‘Smart City’ project has had on Heritage using the entire city as our study pool.

Upon completion of this course the participants should be able to:
• Understand the concept of Smart Heritage
• Apply the concept in to produce a dossier of recommendations of the lessons learned in order to be transferable to other Smart Cities in India.
• Recognise the aspects within a Smart Heritage within a Smart City
• Critically analyse the historical assets in cities as well as finding practical solutions to bridge the gap between heritage and urban development.

The broad aim of the course is to interpret the role a museum can play in Cultural Industry and understand how their history and gradual development has affected the current imagery.


This course will explore some of the key issues related to collection management, presentation, and community engagement practised in India’s museums. We will also try to identify some of the challenges that a museum faces with emphasis on fundraising, and conservation. A wide range of case studies will illustrate the philosophical, ethical and practical approaches to the museum collection, information management, display techniques, and today’s most critical tool – digital media. In addition to these issues, we will also explore new technologies, social media and innovative ideas that can be incorporated into museums to boost the classical nature of museums.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the participants should –

  • Develop an understanding of the concept of ‘collection management’ and core concepts of conservation.
  • Gain ideas to enhance the functioning of the museum in contemporary times.
  • Develop an understanding of museum studies and a range of issues related to it – ethical, political, philosophical, technical, economic and so forth.
  • Develop basic knowledge of the approaches to fundraising, social media management and visitor management.
  • Start thinking critically about the role of museums in a society and how to link museums at a global level.

INTACH Heritage Academy proposes to host a series of training courses that illustrate the building tradition, design and symbolism employed in the realm of sacred built heritage. The focus will be on key typologies of sacred architecture and spaces in India. A tentative schedule and location for this series of courses will be announced here as and when finalised.

The first workshop in this series will focus on the design, symbolism and conservation of historic interiors in churches, chapels and ancillary buildings in Goa.


The broad aim of the workshop is to analyse the symbolism behind the iconography of the ecclesiastical architecture in Goa and to devise practical solutions for their restoration. The Churches in Goa have a strong colonial background as well as the materials that were used in their construction date back to the late 15th to 17th centuries. The major parts of these old churches have wood as their primary material not only as a structural basis but also part of sculptures and other decorative elements. This workshop aims to first understand the nature of symbolism of the architecture and secondly to evaluate conservation/restoration plans that work in correspondence with the churches’ confidence.


This five-day course is designed to provide an understanding of the symbolism and the restoration of wooden components in the ecclesiastical building. The theory behind understanding the iconography of the structures and its interiors will be supported by illustrative discussions, field visits and practical hands-on sessions. This practical training course will be held at a site representative of the colonial architecture in Goa. This will help illustrate a range of problems in-situ and discuss these issues with experts, fellow participants and traditional woodworkers, carpenters, restorers and experts working with the material. A field visit to an ecclesiastical architecture will demonstrate how some of the issues and problems of wood conservation are being addressed at this particular building.
